On Coffee and Essays

Sitting here in Holly’s Coffee,
Sipping the bitter sweet taste of my drink,
I lament at the propesterous
Amount of pressure kids today face.

I wait patiently as they search for words
To key in through their trusted laptops.
I smile to give them hope as they despair
Over their seemingly tainted vacation.

You can do it, Jackson!
Smile, Joel, you’re almost there.
What kind of education are we offering
When set expectations are too much to bear?

Their deadlines are fast approaching
And I can’t help but wonder…
Is this a deadline for an essay,
Or a deadline for their lives?

In many ways, when I look at their faces,
It is the latter that I sadly find
